Though we are small, we are MIGHTY!
There are over 260 libraries in Maine. With budgets ranging from three figures to over a million dollars, populations served starting at under 100 to over 40,000 the diversity of needs is great. Many of them are small, rural or seasonal. This site, created by Voices for Small Maine Libraries (Voices) is devoted to the promotion and preservation of these small and rural libraries that are the special treasures of the Maine library network. We advocate for standards that are equitable and community-appropriate for all libraries.

Why do small libraries matter?
Some of these libraries can trace their origins back hundreds of years to when the citizens in their communities banded together to establish library organizations, to buy and collect books, to create places to house those books, and to become volunteer librarians. Today, these historic libraries, as well as other small, rural or seasonal libraries, serve their communities as hubs for learning, communication, socialization, volunteerism -- for the civic and social lives of their towns and villages.
