Maine Libraries

Our goal is to support libraries who provide services to smaller and/or rural communities or are underfunded or under-represented. For lack of a better term, we use the simple designation “small” to categorize these libraries. Nationally, or state-wide there is no clear agreement on what is considered a “small” library. What you think is what matters. Let us know in the form below.

Historically, free public libraries provided democratized access to information. While that is still a vital role, many small libraries have unique characteristics rooted to their histories and are well-matched to their communities. Additionally they provide services and programming that are specifically needed by each of their communities.

For a list of Maine’s libraries we refer you to the list of the libraries recognized by the Maine State Library, but please note that there are Maine libraries not currently listed.​
